Save yourself a lot of annoyance and aggravation.

As far as getting an older printer serviced or maintained, by the time you add shipping and insurance (assuming you don't live near a service center and can carry the printer in), it's just about as cheap to buy a new printer. Making a printer that lasts reliably for a very long time would certainly cut into their sales. But I'm pretty sure that's Epson's plan anyway. Based on my experience, with fairly heavy useage, one cannot expect to get more than 4 or 5 years out of these printers. I got a good price on the R1900 plus a rebate and I am hoping it will last me for a few years of printing without too much aggravation. After repeatedly cleaning the feed rollers (as well as many cleaning cycles and wasted ink for clogged heads), I finally solved my problem by purchasing an R1900. It's gotten a lot of use for event photo order printing. I purchased my R1800 early in 2006 (to replace a 5-year old 2200 that died).
